Does Stress Cause Acne?

It has long been thought that there is a direct correlation between increased stress levels and the breakout of acne; of course stress will affect different people in different ways. Sometimes an individual might be better placed to deal with the stresses and strains of daily life that prevents them from suffering from acne.

There are many different types of stress that can occur, very often just in normal everyday life, some examples of this can be things like:

  • Examinations
  • Pregnancy
  • Bereavement
  • Financial worries
  • Relationship issues
  • Bullying
  • Work issues
  • Unemployment

In fact the list is pretty endless, with many people having to face and deal with various levels of stress at a number of different times of their lives.

Studies have found that when people are under increased and often prolonged periods of stress their bodies will stimulate the adrenal glands, when this happens the body will go on to produce more hormones. This in turn will create a hormonal imbalance that will very often lead to the outbreak of acne. In addition to this this increased level of hormones can also have the effect of slowing down the body’s own natural healing process, making it much more difficult for the acne to clear up.

So stress will not only effect in the development of the acne break outs, it will also worsen the overall skin condition. The adrenal glands will also produce an oversupply of cortisol; this naturally found steroid is responsible for helping the sebaceous glands produce more oil for the skin.
