Acne can develop at almost any time of life, although for most people it tends to be much more common during the ages of 11 to 30. Very often it is said that this is a the time when hormones are playing havoc with the body and creating massive additional levels of sebum; it is this sebum that can be seen as acne on the areas of the skin. Sometimes an individual might be better placed to deal with the stresses and strains of daily life that prevents them from suffering from acne.

- Relationship issues
- Work issues
In fact the list is pretty endless, with many people having to face and deal with various levels of stress at a number of different times of their lives.
Studies have found that when people are under increased and often prolonged periods of stress their bodies will stimulate the adrenal glands, when this happens the body will go on to produce more hormones. This in turn will create a hormonal imbalance that will very often lead to the outbreak of acne. In addition to this this increased level of hormones can also have the effect of slowing down the body’s own natural healing process, making it much more difficult for the acne to clear up.
So stress will not only effect in the development of the acne break outs, it will also worsen the overall skin condition. The adrenal glands will also produce an oversupply of cortisol; this naturally found steroid is responsible for helping the sebaceous glands produce more oil for the skin.
How to Deal With Increased Levels of Stress
Because everyone will have a different level of tolerance to stress and anxiety it can be difficult to advise on the exact course of action that should be taken; however in the main trying to do some of the following can be helpful to reduce stress levels and decrease the chances of acne break outs:
- Meditation or yoga
- Daily or weekly exercise
- Share your issues with someone close
- Eat a healthy balanced diet
- Keep a journal of your stress issues
In the more serious cases of anxiety and stress it is important to feel that you can talk to your health care professional, sometimes just being able to get things off of your chest can be a fantastic way to relieve the symptoms of stress. In the more severe cases of stress it might be that they prescribe some medicine that can help to alleviate the symptoms of stress and anxiety.
It should never be regarded as a sign of weakness that you feel that you need to talk to someone about stress levels, in fact it is quite the opposite of this; once you share how you feel you will be well on the road to being able to better deal with your stress and keep your acne under better control.
