Tips for Avoiding Acne Caused by Make-Up

Most women are led to believe that make-up causes acne from a young age but many do not know if this is true, and if it is how to avoid it. Ultimately the answer to the question ‘does make-up cause acne?’ is yes it can.

There is even a clinical name for this type of acne which is Acne Cosmetica, although this does not relate solely to the use of make-up, as it includes any product that may be used on the face and can affect both men and women.

makeup acneThere are hundreds of chemicals that are uses in make-up and it is important to find a brand that will suit the type of skin a person has. Some types of make-up should be avoided as make-up migrates during the day and can end up clogging pores. This means that sebum and dead skin cells can become trapped resulting in acne. Many people who suffer from this kind of acne find themselves trapped in a vicious circle as they get acne from wearing make-up and then end up using make-up to cover the acne. This can result in the condition becoming worse and the circle starting over again.

Tips for Avoiding Acne Caused by Make-Up

There are a number of ways for people to avoid ending up in the never ending cycle of applying make-up to cover acne, ending up with the acne becoming worse.

  • Remove make-up before bed – This is an important step to take when trying to avoid acne brought on by wearing make-up as it will give skin the chance to breath. By using a make-up remover and cleanser, it will unclog pores and not allow sebum and skin cells to build up.
  • Choose noncomedogenic make-up – This type of product does not contain the ingredients that are known to clog pores. Many women will find that by changing to this type of product, it enables existing acne to clear up and does not result in further breakouts.
  • Clean brushes and applicators – If a person does not want to use disposable applicators, which are best, they should ensure that brushes are cleaned after each use and washed once a week with an antibacterial soap. This is due to the fact that brushes can be a great place for acne causing bacteria to hide.
  • Do not share applicators – Many women do this without thinking, as sharing a brush or applicator with a friend may be a normal occurrence. They should remember that while they may clean their brushes, their friends may not be so careful with theirs and they could end up spreading someone else bacteria over their own face, while applying make-up.
  • Choose a powder based make-up – Where ever possible it is advisable to choose a powder based product over a liquid product. Liquid products must have oil as an ingredient to help them cover properly and this can result in clogged pores. Powder products do not contain oil and are less likely to cause acne.
  • Find the right brand – There are hundreds of make-up brands to choose from and finding the right one, may mean the difference between suffering from acne or not. Even noncomedogenic brands can cause outbreaks in people with particularly sensitive skin so it is important to try different brands until the right one is found.
  • Try not to wear make-up – This is the most obvious solution, but many women find this difficult to do, especially those who have become trapped in the vicious circle of covering up acne with make-up. However, even going without make-up occasionally can help the skin to heal and give it a break.
